The Copshaw Common Riding held their annual New Years
Honours ceremony on Saturday 14th February, again as in previous
years this was a great success with a very good turn out to support the Common
Riding.
The awards this year went to several local groups, all of
whom do a great job in their own separate ways, and it was great to see so many
of the groups represented on the night, I’m sure most were attracted by the
sight of DJ Erub Knubnum and his wheels of steel, although sight might be a
poor description as being vertically challenged, generally most could only see
the top of his head!!
The First Responders were given £250 to help with their
ongoing training and equipment needs. The Polysport was also given £250 and we
are very grateful to them, for letting us use the facility on Common Riding
day, the Garden Party/Sports/Disco/Sing Song is the latest in a long line of
new Ancient Traditions to grace the big day and was very well received by
everyone in attendance last year. The LLAGS were given £136.31 towards the
Christmas lights fund, this added to the collection taken on the Switching Off of
the lights Ceremony, made a total of £250 the LLAGS were very well represented
on the night, although it was a bit unfair for it to be compared to an episode
of Desperate Housewives!!
Newcastleton Primary School were given £1000 to go towards
buying a new Smart Board, hopefully this will ensure that future generations of
Copshaw kids are more smart than bored!!
We made a Special Achievement Award this year to acknowledge
Libby Clegg’s Olympic Silver medal performance in Beijing, Libby received a specially
commissioned slate, hand painted by local decorative slate specialists Sneddons
(a Copshaw Common Riding approved decorative slate supplier)
The money awarded on the night took the total donated by the
Common Riding since our inception to over £10,000, (not bad for 8 bored lads
and a Transvestite!) all given to help Copshaw retain it’s unique position as a
community that realises that you have to pull together to survive.
Finally our next big event is the Tub’s Ball, where the 2009
Tub will be voted for and unveiled, the early short list of candidates lying
this year is exceptional and no doubt their campaign managers will be preparing
plans for the election already, the Tubs Ball will take place in the Village
Hall on the 30th May, more details will follow in due course.
